Several parents have expressed concern about Elementary School Principal Susan Carruth’s recent trip to Africa. Be assured that the safety and welfare of our students is our top priority at De Leon ISD. Ms. Carruth has visited the country of South Africa. South Africa is at the southern-most tip of Africa and is approximately 3300 miles away from Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, the countries which are experiencing the Ebola outbreak. Ms.Carruth has not performed any humanitarian work with Ebola patients or spent time with people who are ill from the virus, and any claims to that effect are false.
The District is in communication with county and state health officials regarding current efforts to monitor and contain Ebola activity in Texas. The District will continue to follow its protocols for cleaning and disinfecting its campuses. We will continue taking prudent measures to keep our children safe. In the event that there is an actual risk of Ebola exposure to our students, the District will cooperate with health officials to ensure that parents are promptly notified. At this time, we have no reason to think that any such risk has presented itself in De Leon ISD.
